Professor Jamie MacDougall, from the Department of Psychology, is the recipient of the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) Award for Distinguished Contributions to Public or Community Service. In selecting MacDougall, the CPA described him as "dedicated, persistent, and able to form meaningful partnerships across communities, agencies, academia and government." MacDougall's research deals with the biological, social and psychological factors linked to deafness. He has founded research institutes in both Montreal and Ottawa.
Dr. James Lund, dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, was recently awarded the Michel Sarrazin Prize. This honour is given to outstanding researchers who have made major contributions to our understanding of the physiological sciences. Lund was invited to present the 23rd Sarrazin lecture at the Canadian Physiological Society Conference in Lake Louise, Alberta, in January.
Ms. Sanrah Ali-Khan, a master's student in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, has been selected by the country's university track and field coaches as the female athlete of the year in that sport. Ali-Khan recently picked up gold and silver medals in the Canadian track and field championships.
Mr. Mathieu Darche, an undergraduate in the Faculty of Management, has become the first McGill Redmen hockey player in 16 years to lead the country in scoring. The left wing completed regular season play with 27 goals and 62 points in 26 games. He is just the second McGill player to win the national scoring title and the first since George Burnett in 1983.
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology has won a Wellcome Visiting Professorship in the Microbiological Sciences, the only Canadian university to do so. The Selection Committee of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) chose McGill to host the visit of a Wellcome Professor, Dr. Robert Kadner from the University of Virgina. Kadner, a teaching award winner and a highly regarded authority on bacterial transport, will spend five days at McGill. McGill microbiology and immunology professor Michael DuBow has been invited to Arkansas Technical University, also through the Wellcome Visiting Professorship program.
