Marliss delivers

Professor of Medicine Errol B. Marliss earned the remarkable distinction of delivering the Banting and Best Memorial Lecture at the World Diabetes Congress, which ran from Dec. 3-7 in Capetown, South Africa. Director of the McGill Nutrition and Food Science Centre, Dr. Marliss was selected by the Canadian Diabetes Association to give the lecture based on the exceptional quality of his clinical research activity at both the national and international levels. Considered the premier global diabetes summit, the congress takes place once every three years. It brings together leading physicians, researchers and advocates from around the world.

Johnston breaks new ground

Dr. Celeste Johnston of the School of Nursing will receive the 2007 Canadian Pain Society Distinguished Career Award. The award recognizes the formidable contributions Dr. Johnston has made to the assessment and management of infant pain. Dr. Johnston, who is the first nurse and only the second woman to receive the accolade, will formally accept it at a gala dinner in Ottawa in May. As this year's recipient, she has also been invited to deliver a keynote address at the Canadian Pain Association's 2007 Annual Conference.

Electric snowmobile all the buzz

The McGill Electric Snowmobile Team, which consists of 15 students from the departments of Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering, took home the Energia prize in the student design category at last month's 17th annual Energia awards gala, sponsored by l'Association Québecoise pour la maîtrise de l'énergie (AQME). Project leader Simon Ouellette and team members Olivier Proulx, Albert Matthews and Alexandre Poisson were on hand to accept the award, which comes with $1,500.
