Caps, gown and smiles

They are nearly 750 strong and they come from the four corners of the globe. They are young and old, men and women. Different as they may be, they gathered on Nov. 10 at Place des Arts for one common purpose — to don the freshly minted caps, gowns and smiles of new McGill graduates.

Joining their ranks were three honorary degree recipients: Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, Montreal Canadiens hockey legend Jean Béliveau and Canadian literary champion Judith W. Mappin. These two pages contain just a sample of the sights and stories that marked another momentous Fall Convocation.

In addition to handing out the Principal's Prize for Excellence in Teaching (see opposite page for story), Heather Munroe-Blum also presented $5,000 cheques to the winners of the 2005-06 Principal's Awards for Administrative and Support Staff; Mary-Beth Campbell, Mary Jo McCullogh, Penelope Aubin, Gordon Bingham and Kelly Gallacher.

Addressing the audience, Canada's Governor General Michaëlle Jean said, 'There is nothing more luminous than that leap from an individual adventure to a more universal one. It is only by thinking that we are able to invent, transcend and create.'
