Trio triumphs

Three McGill researchers have been chosen for the exceptional distinction of being Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) International Research Scholars. Dr. Erwin Schurr of the Centre for the Study of Host Resistance, Dr. Nahum Sonenberg of McGill's Cancer Centre and Dr. Eric Shoubridge of the Montreal Neurological Institute will each receive a five-year grant worth nearly $500,000 for their outstanding contributions to biomedical research. The Maryland-based HHMI has awarded 11 International Research Scholar grants to McGill since 1991. This is Shoubridge's second HHMI award and Sonenberg's third.

Student scholarships

Precarn Incorporated, an independent, not-for-profit company that supports the pre-commercial development of leading-edge techmologies, has awarded 54 Canadian students a total of $405,000 as part of a scholarship pool. The funding goes to those doing research on robotics and intelligent systems (IS). The five McGill graduate students who won scholarships include Carmen Au, Michele Faragalli, Stephane Pelletier, Peter Savadjiev.
