Saying it with a stamp

Canada Post helps Macdonald College mark 100 years

Most of us can at least count on getting a card or two on our birthday, but Macdonald College is getting its very own postage stamp.

Commemorative stamp

The 100th-anniversary gift from Canada Post is a single, 51-cent commemorative stamp to be unveiled at the Ste. Anne de Bellevue campus next Tuesday, Sept. 26. The unveiling ceremony is the first event on a year-long calendar of centenary celebrations at Mac.

Chandra Madramootoo, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, will be joined by McGill Chancellor Richard Pound and Principal and Vice-Chancellor Heather Munroe-Blum, as well as Canada Post and local elected officials, to mark the occasion.

"When Sir William Macdonald founded Macdonald College, it was a landmark in philanthropy," said Madramootoo, adding that the commemorative stamp is a testament to Sir William's leadership and vision in creating what has become an internationally recognized institution.

Sir William Macdonald, a Scottish tobacco manufacturer and great supporter of education, founded the agricultural and teaching college on farm properties he purchased at the western tip of Montreal Island in 1904. Construction began the following year and in 1906 Macdonald turned over the deeds to the Board of Governors of McGill University, along with a $2-million endowment to establish the college.

Today, the 650-hectare campus is home to the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition.

The Macdonald stamp, which depicts the main building of the campus and features the school's familiar gold and green crest, is one of only 21 commemorative stamps Canada Post is issuing this year.
