Professor John Jonas from the Department of Mining, Metals and Materials Engineering has been awarded the Prix Urgel-Archambault by the Association canadienne-française pour l'avancement des sciences (Acfas). The prize recognizes career excellence in the fields of physical sciences, mathematics or engineering. Jonas is best known for his research on what happens to steel when it is subjected to intense pressure and heat. These studies have led to substantial improvements in how steel is manufactured industrially.
David Dorais, a doctoral in the Department of French Language and Literature, won Acfas's Prix Desjardins d'excellence pour étudiants-chercheurs for his work on eroticism in French Renaissance poetry. The prize recognizes the best doctoral research in fields outside of health science, pharmaceutical studies or natural resources.
Professor Geneviéve Leide-linger from the English and French Language Centre has won the Ghislaine-Coutu-Vaillancourt Prize from the Quebec Association of Teachers of French as a Second Language. The award is in recognition of 13 years of outstanding work in this area.
Michelle Williams, a student in the Faculty of Law, has been selected as a Blake Scholar. The scholarship program, funded by Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP, involves scholarships of up to $5,000 for law students who demonstrated their potential through academic performance, community involvement and extracurricular activities. The award goes to students who have completed their first year of law school and it is renewable for a second year if their high academic standing is maintained.
