A walk and a talk for Palliative Care Week

The cliché tells us that what can't be cured must be endured. The McGill-affiliated Council on Palliative Care (CPC) reminds us that, even for someone with an incurable disease, life is not something to be endured, but enjoyed.

Accordingly, palliative care givers seek to alleviate pain and other symptoms and achieve the best possible quality of life for patients and their families.

Raising awareness of this compassionate mission is the goal of National Palliative Care Week, May 7-13, which will be marked at McGill by two CPC-organized events—a fundraising hike and a special lecture.

The Tenth Annual Sandra Goldberg Memorial Lecture, "Palliative Care Isn't Just About Cancer," will be delivered by Dr. Gian Domenico Borasio, neurologist, palliative care physician and Professor and Chair in Palliative Medicine at the Interdisciplinary Center for Palliative Medicine and the Department of Neurology at the University of Munich.

Dr. Borasio is credited with playing an instrumental role in the creation of a dedicated palliative care unit at the Munich University Hospital.

In addition to Dr. Borasio's talk, the CPC has organized a charity hike which will take place on Sunday, May 6, one day before Palliative Care Week officially begins.

Hikers are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to their 5 km fund-raising walk, which takes place on Ile Ste-Hélène and Ile Notre-Dame.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will be divided among The Council on Palliative Care, The Lighthouse, Children and Families and the McGill University ealth Centre (MUHC) palliative care units.
