Understanding Earth: it's all in the rocks

If you're one of those who always wanted to try yoga but were put off at the thought of hiking up the hill to the Currie Gym, having to change, work out, then shower, all in the space of one hour -- you now have no more excuses.
Fitness is coming to the people -- the majority of McGill people, that is, those who work south of Dr Penfield.
In a move to make it as simple as possible for McGill staff members to stretch, relax, build strength and sweat -- just a little -- Jill Barker, coordinator of recreation and fitness, and Phil Quintal, coordinator of instructionals and sports camps, have devised "Lunch Break Fitness."
On every Thursday in June, from 12 to 12:40, McGill staff members need only make their way to Redpath Hall, put on something loose, then get down to a little hatha yoga, tai chi, power yoga and "stretch and strength" exercises. Furthermore, these classes are free.
For those who prefer to exercise outdoors and maybe socialize at the same time, the walking club, which meets at noon at the James Administration Building every Monday and Wednesday, starting May 7, may be an attractive activity.
As described in FIT@McGILL, the newly launched newsletter from the Department of Athletics, walking "is as close to the perfect form of exercise as one can get... Walking, at any speed, reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, increases bone density, burns calories and improves muscle tone."
Barker hopes that this springtime sampling of fitness classes will entice more McGill staff to enjoy the walk up the hill for next fall's fitness classes. "People want fitness from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm every Tuesday and Thursday," she says. "But that's not what fitness is. Fitness is walking up a hill with pleasure."
