Hanna Waluzyniec, Head of the Schulich Library of Science and Engineering, is the winner of the McGill University Libraries' Career Recognition Award for 2002. Zafiro Bouwman, Serials Accounting Clerk, Library Technical Services, is the winner of the McGill University Libraries' Staff Excellence Award for 2002. Both awards were presented at a reception in the Office of the Trenholme Director of Libraries on May 14.
McGill Chancellor Richard Pound, a long-time International Olympic Committee member, was honoured by the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Pound became the first Canadian to be presented with the Gold Medallion Award, given annually to a former competitive swimmer for his or her national or international achievements in the field of science, entertainment, art, business, education or government.
Professor Michael Bristol, Greenshields Professor of English and a distinguished Shakespearean scholar, has received the Faculty of Arts' Distinguished Research Award for 2002.
3M Canada has awarded Trisha Brodie and Jennifer Stanley, two graduate students in the MSc Occupational Health Sciences program of the Joint Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Occupational Health a 3M Occupational Hygiene Scholarship of $1,000 each.
Electrical Engineering student Tina Chen and Mining Engineering student Stephanie Robinson won Excelle Science awards from Chapeau, les filles!, a Quebec government contest to promote women in engineering.
As the result of a joint effort by Jennifer Towell in the Office of the Vice-Principal, Research, Education professor Linda Cooper and Kate Williams of the University Relations Office, our application to NSERC's SPARK (Students Promoting Awareness of Research Knowledge competition) was approved and will start in the fall.
The Study Centre of the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) has awarded research fellowships as part of its 2002-2003 Visiting Scholars Program to Architecture professor Martin Bressani to pursue his research project, "Surface into Depth: A Tracing of Viollet-le-Duc's Constructive Imagination," and to Sandra Buckley for "The Architecture of Mobility: Remapping the Tokyo Urbanscape."
Professor Hans Hofmann, adjunct Professor in Earth and Planetary Sciences and the Redpath Museum, received the Walcott Medal and prize of $10,000 from the US National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC.
McGill Daily copy editor Simon Rabinovitch won the CAUT award for outstanding reporting in the student media for his article "Corporations Limiting Academic Freedom?" (CUP, 2001).
