Architecture professor Avi Friedman has earned the 2001-02 ACSA Collaborative Practice Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. The ACSA honours the best practices in school-based community outreach programs that demonstrate how faculty, students and communities can work together. Friedman led a housing rehabilitation project in Cornwall, Ontario.

Dr Sarah Prichard from the Department of Medicine has been named as a new member of the governing council for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Prichard studies cardiovascular disease in renal failure. She is the president of the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis.

Domenico Marcario, a student in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, has become the first male basketball player from McGill in 25 years to earn All-Canadian status. A guard with the McGill Redmen, Marcario was named player of the year in the Quebec conference, led that league in scoring and was 13th in the nation, with an average score of 18.7 points over 15 regular-season games.

Annia Kycia, a recent graduate from the Department of Chemistry, received the 2001 Award of the Macromolecular Science and Engineering Division (MSED) of the CSC (Canadian Society for Chemistry) for the highest quality undergraduate project (honours thesis or project report) in polymer science in all of Canada. Applications were accepted from students in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering and associated departments. Kycia completed her award-winning block copolymer research with Professor Adi Eisenberg.

Professor Chandra Madra-mootoo, director of the Brace Centre for Water Resources Management, was made an honorary member of the Interstate Commission on Water Coordination of the Aral Sea Basin. With funding from CIDA, and in collaboration with the ICWC, the Brace Centre has established a Regional Water Resources Training Centre in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and is undertaking several studies in water policy, water law, environmental management, irrigation and drainage in the region.

Isabel Deslauriers, an honours student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, earned the 2001 IEEE Power Engineering Society Student Prize Paper Award. Deslauriers earned the prize for her paper, "Analytical Derivation of Natural PWM Output Spectrum and Conditions for Signal Recovery." Her work was supervised by electrical and computer engineering professor Boon Teck Ooi. The award is presented by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
