Kudos
Dr. Richard Latt, director of the Animal Resources Centre and McGill's animal care officer, has been presented with the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science's 2001 Charles River Award. Latt, who holds appointments in both pathology and medicine and has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals, was hailed as "among the pioneers in the field of laboratory animal science" and as a man who "has demonstrated integrity, skill and leadership qualities."
Professor Margaret Somerville from the Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law has been selected as the 2002 winner of the Kroeger College Award for Ethics. Somerville was chosen for her "considerable contribution to the public's understanding of, and appreciation for, the ethical dimensions of so many of the issues we as a society face today." The awards are presented by Carleton University.
Dr. Harvey Guyda, a pediatrics professor and the McGill University Health Centre's physician-in-chief for the Montreal Children's Hospital, has been appointed as the president of the Diabetic Children's Foundation. The foundation supports research into diabetes, offers information and support for parents of children newly diagnosed with diabetes, and runs a special summer camp for diabetic children.
The McGill Reporter earned a bronze medal in a recent competition of university newspapers and newsletters using two colours or less. The competition, organized by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, was open to universities from Quebec, the Maritimes and the northeastern United States. Editor Daniel McCabe, former editor Bronwyn Chester (now the communications officer for Macdonald Campus) and former designer Teena Aujla share the prize. Although the Reporter's editor harrumphed, "Bronze Schmonze," when informed of the award, he did warrant that it was somewhat impressive that the paper had managed to finish in the top three in this competition for six consecutive years.
