Paul J. Thomassin, Department of Agricultural Economics, is the lead researcher of a new SSHRC-BIOCAP Strategic Joint Initiative Grant valued at $541,000 over three years, one of six SSHRC-BIOCAP National Research Networks on the human dimensions of biosphere greenhouse gas management. Thomassin will investigate the development of a domestic emission trading system for carbon dioxide that includes carbon offsets from the agriculture and forestry sectors.

Rosa Kouri and Abhay Oberoi were honoured as Goldman Sachs Global Leaders. They were selected on the basis of their outstanding academic abilities and leadership achievements. Rosa is a double major in economics and political science. Abhay is majoring in electrical engineering.

Bernard Shapiro, former Principal and Vice-Chancellor, will be honoured by The Learning Partnership (TLP) at the 2003 Tribute Dinner "Celebrating Public Education -- Champions of Public Education" to be held May 8 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

History professor Brian Young has been given the 2003 Gerard Parizeau Award, worth $30,000, for his valuable and original contribution to the social and economic history of Quebec.

The official announcement of the new Montreal Inter-university Group for Nursing Research (MIGNR) was made April 3. The preliminary plan provided by principal investigators Céline Goulet, Université de Montréal, and Celeste Johnston, McGill University, was approved last December, and the universities have one year to submit a definitive research project on nursing interventions and their impact on the health of the population. At the end of next year, subject to a favourable evaluation by an FRSQ peer review committee, the nursing research group will receive from its partners $2 million in financial support, over a four-year period. U de M dean of nursing Christine Colin and Susan French, associate dean, Faculty of Medicine, and director, School of Nursing, were congratulated on the quality of the preliminary plan. They stressed the need to provide the best possible health care to Quebecers. The best way to accomplish this, they said, is to pool both universities' expertise in such areas as evaluation of quality health care, care for patients with cognitive deficits, infant pain, health care promotion and family health.
