Mini-EdPsych: Learning, knowing, thinking, healing

The Department of Education and Counselling Psychology gets into the McGill Mini swing of things this spring with its seven-week lecture series Mini-EdPsych: Learning: A Lifetime Journey.

The 90-minute lectures take place every Thursday evening from April 24 to June 5 at 6:30 p.m., with registration for each session starting at 6. All lectures take place in Room 129 of the Education Building's Jack Cram Auditorium, 3700 McTavish St.

"There are a lot of issues that we deal with that we think would be of interest to the public," said Education and Counselling Psychology Department Chair and James McGill Professor Dr. Susanne Lajoie, who gives the first lecture in the series on April 24. "A series like this allows our researchers to get our ideas out there in a way the public can understand."

The lecture series aims to help people think about different aspects of learning by exploring topics such as how to harness your potential on the road to becoming an expert, how to motivate yourself to learn, what strategies to use in the face of adversity, and how individuals differ in the paths they take toward becoming competent.

The individual lectures cover the spectrum of learning from childhood to adulthood, looking at how children develop morally, cognitively and emotionally as well as new methods for helping adults overcome their fears and let healing occur in their lives.

"We deal with everything from cognitive psychology to counselling psychology, so there are many different aspects to our department," Lajoie said. "We just thought a lecture series like this would be a great way to get people to understand who we are and become interested in what we do."

All lectures will be presented in English. The cost for the series is $100 or $60 for students and seniors (65+). Advance registration and payment is required. For information, visit www.mcgill.ca/edu-ecp/miniedpsych.
