New NSERC grants announced

As part of the federal government's new science and technology strategy, it was announced this week that McGill researchers will receive $38.6 million in funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC).

On Monday, May 28, Parliamentary Secretary Colin Carrie announced on behalf of Industry Minister Maxime Bernier and president of NSERC Dr. Suzanne Fortier that McGill will receive 192 NSERC Discovery Grants worth a total of $32.4 million, in addition to 310 student scholarships totaling $6.2 million.

In addition to the $38.6 million, four McGill researchers will each receive a three-year $120,000 grant as part of the Discovery Accelerator Supplements program, designed to support outstanding scientific researchers at a critical juncture in their careers. They are Andrew Hendry of the Redpath Museum, Nilima Nigam of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Paul Wiseman of the Department of Physics and Bruce Pike of the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

"One of the things that's always a been a problem for me is finding the money to support graduate students and post-docs. This money will help me to hire more of them" said one of the four recipients, Prof. Nigam, whose research centres on using mathematical language to describe such real-world phenomena as bone growth in arthritis patients, nano-technology and electro-magnetic waves. "It will also help me to buy state-of-the-art computer equipment and organize conferences, workshops and summer schools," she said.

The funding announcement was part of the federal government's new science and technology strategy, Mobilizing Science and Technology to Canada's Advantage, which McGill, along with 12 other premier research universities, formally hailed as an important commitment to strengthening Canada's research advantage when it was unveiled earlier this month.

In all, NSERC's 2007 grants and scholarships program will provide $583 million to 10,000 professors and students across Canada.
