Desmond Morton, professor of history and Hiram Mills Chair, received the Royal Canadian Military Institute's 2004 Hamilton E. Boulter Award, which was presented by Al Navis, who chaired the judging panel. This annual award is given for the most outstanding literary contribution to the institute's bi-monthly journal, SITREP.

Two McGill professors are among the 14 Canadian researchers who were awarded Killam Research Fellowships on March 3. East Asian studies professor Kenneth Dean will study regional ritual networks in Southeast China, while physics professor Clifford Burgess will study string cosmology. The fellowships enable Canada's best scientists and scholars to devote two years to full-time research and writing.

Assistant Professor Guillaume Gervais of the Physics Depart-ment will receive the prestigious Sloan Research Fellowship, which provides funds to outstanding researchers early in their academic careers. Grants are $45,000 (US) for a two-year period. Since the fellowship's creation in 1955, 32 Sloan Fellows have gone on to win Nobel Prizes and hundreds have received other prestigious awards and honours.

McGill Trivia Team members Andrew Segal, Jonathan Klein, Angus Cepka and John Dingle will compete against 31 other teams at the Intercollegiate Championship Tournament in New Orleans on April 8 and 9. Last month, the four undergraduate students won the Canadian Sectional Tournament in Ottawa, which qualified them for the upcoming competition.
