Psychology Professor Babara Sherwin has won the 2004 NAMS/Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals Leadership Award in Androgen Research, for her career contribution to the understanding of androgen's role in postmenopausal women.

Psychology Professor Frances Aboud will receive the Canadian Psychological Associa-tion 2005 Award for Distin-guished Contributions to Public or Community Service. She has worked with the McGill-Ethiopia Community Health Project to raise professional skills in rural communities.

Psychology Professor Peter Milner, will receive the 2005 Canadian Psychological Association Gold Medal Award, which recognizes exceptional career contributions to Canadian Psychology.

Chemistry Professor Joe Schwarcz, head of the Office for Science and Society, has received the 2005 Sanford Fleming Medal from the Royal Canadian Institute for outstanding contributions to the public understanding of science.

Four discoveries by McGill University scientists have been listed in Québec Science magazine's Top Ten Discoveries of 2004. February's issue describes the work of biologist Graham Bell and doctoral student Sinead Collins who discovered that the ability of plants to counteract the greenhouse effect has been overestimated; McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) clinician Qutayba Hamid for asthma research; postdoctoral researcher Scott Ransom for characterizing the first double pulsar system, which contains two radio-emitting neutron stars; and geneticist Erwin Schurr for bringing science one step closer to the eradication of leprosy. They were described as discoveries that have the potential to "change the world."
