Dining-at-McGill solicits views from across campus

The Dining-at-McGill Advisory Committee is inviting students, staff and faculty and food providers on campus to make submissions to the Committee on how McGill can best provide high-quality food, variety, convenience of operating hours, choice of locations, high safety standards, sound environmental practices, and pleasant surroundings.

Written submissions should be sent by November 19, 2004, to the Chair at dining-at-mcgill@physics.mcgill.ca.

The Committee, which will make recommendations to the Vice-Principal (Administration and Finance) by January 31, 2005, is made up of student members Daniel Friedlaender, Alex Bourque and Jason Paseli, faculty members Linda Jacobs Starkey and Jim Nicell. Administrative and support staff are François Carrier and Jonathan Rousham. Martha Crago will represent the Provost's office. Alan Charade, Director of Ancillary Services, will serve as a resource person. The chair is Martin Grant of the Physics Department.

McGill beefing up campus security

A series of five muggings in the past month has put McGill on high alert. The university's security services have beefed up their patrols to ensure that the campus continues to remain safe. The university has also alerted students, faculty and staff to be extra cautious when walking at night and to report anything suspicious to security immediately.

Police at Station 20 are investigating and have increased their vigilance in the area. McGill security is working closely with police on these cases.

All the muggings occurred in the area of Dr. Penfield and McTavish streets between 9 pm and 2 am. In some of the incidents, the muggers were armed. While none of the victims has been seriously injured, some were punched and pushed to the ground.

"We have increased our foot patrols in the area and our two car patrollers circulate around that area more frequently," said Louise Savard, Manager of Security Services.

Emilie Boucher of Walksafe said her group is trying to get more teams out and are receiving more calls.

Any suspicious person or behaviour should be immediately reported to security at 398-3000. Walksafe, which is a student-run volunteer escort service, can be reached at 398-2498.

McGill Trivia winners

The third annual McGill Trivia Contest saw a record 21 one teams participate, raising nearly $400 dollars for Centraide.

The winners were the DAR Vaders, from Development and Alumni Relations. Second place went to the Trivia Tigers, from the McGill Trivia club. Third place went to Capricorn. There was a three way tie for fourth place, with the Career and Placement Services CAPsizers, the Maroons (ringers from Mckibbin's pub trivia night) and the Reporter's own Team Pravda (oh, but wait for next year….)

Kimberly Stephenson of the McGill Bookstore came up with the exceedingly tough questions — the top score was 36 out of a possible 61. Prizes were donated by Random House, John Wylie and Sons, Raincoast Publishing, Lexa, Georgetown Publishing, Harper Collins, Penguin Books and Canadian Manda.
