New appointments in the Faculty of Arts

Over the past three years the Faculty has witnessed incredible growth: in 2002-2003, we welcomed 24 new members to the Faculty; in 2003-2004, we welcomed 22 more; and this year a further 27 new professors joined the ranks.

Honouring our own: Faculty of Arts administrators recognized

This year, the Faculty of Arts presented an Award of Excellence for Administrative and Support Staff to two outstanding administrative officers, Georgii Mikula from the Department of History and Linda Montreuil from the Department of Economics. The Award for Excellence in Service to Graduate and Postdoctoral Students was won this year by Lynda Bastien of the Department of Languages and Literatures Administrative Services.

Christine Zeindler has joined the McGill University Relations Office (URO) as a communications officer.

Name change

The ICC is now known as Instructional Multimedia Services (IMS). This change of name was made to better reflect the IMS's role as McGill's central facility for the design, development and production of multimedia materials as well as the loaning, installation and maintenance of audiovisual equipment. IMS also provides television production, photography and graphic design services. The new name will be phased in, so for a while there will be an overlap as the IMS makes adjustments to signage, equipment labels, stationery and so forth. The URL will change to www.mcgill.ca/ims, but the previous URL, www.mcgill.ca/icc, will still operate for now. All phone numbers and building addresses remain the same.

On the move

Between now and January 2005, a number of offices and services are being relocated within the James (Administration) Building.

Administrative transfers

The Centre for Developing-Area Studies, which used to report to the vice-principal (research), now reports to the dean of the Faculty of Arts. The McGill Centre for Research and Teaching on Women, formerly reporting to the provost, now reports to the dean of the Faculty of Arts.

Appointments

On September 7, 2004, the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors approved the appointment of Professor Marc Raboy, former director of the joint PhD program in communications at Université de Montréal, Concordia University and the Université du Québec à Montréal, to the Beaverbrook Chair in Ethics, Media and Communications, in the Department of Art History and Communication Studies, as of August 1, 2004.

New exchange agreements

APPC recently approved a multilateral exchange agreement for North American students studying North America, linking eight universities within the Program for North American Mobility in Higher Education.

The proceedings of the colloquium in honour of Bernard J. Shapiro, "The Evolving University/ l'Université en mutation," organized by the office of the provost and held on November 20, 2002, will be published this fall by McGill-Queen's University Press, with Paul Axelrod (dean, Faculty of Education, York University) as editor.
