Kudos

The McGill University Jazz Orchestra whupped two challengers from U of T in the latter's hometown at a Battle of the Bands. Toronto Star music critic called the groups performance "slicker and sharper" than their rivals, with a "special mettle."

Dr. Edward Fon at the MNI received a grant from the Michael J. Fox Foundation to further his research in the degeneration of dopamine neurons in Parkinson's Diesease. Fon was the only recipient at a Canadian institution in the $2.6 million initiative.

Her Most Excellent Majesty, Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her Other Realms and Territories, Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, and Defender of the Faith recognized library and information studies Professor Peter F. McNally with a Golden Jubilee medal. It was presented by Lieutenant Governor Lise Thibault in Quebec City.

Dr. Robin Poole has been named as the co-recipient of the 2003 Carol Nachman Prize for Rheumatology. The international award is for Dr Poole's research work in arthritis, and will be presented in Wiesbaden, Germany this May.

Eighteen McGill swimmers will be heading to Victoria for the national championship after leaving competitors sputtering in their wake at the Quebec University champion swim meet in St. Foy. The men's team came first with a fourgold one silver performance by Ryan Tomicic. The women finished second to Laval, led by a Carolyn McCabe who set a provincial record in the freestyle relay.

The McGill Woodsmen teams keep lumbering across the country, sawing through the competition and sprucing up their record. The women stumped their opponents for the 20th straight year in the Canadian Intercollegiate Lumberjack Association Championship in Truro, Nova Scotia while the other men's teams were left pining for McGill's first place.
