Kudos

A new agency that will oversee a billion-dollar harbour front re-development will be led by none other than outgoing McGill principal Bernard Shapiro. The agency--called Société du Havre de Montréal--will be led by Dr Shapiro and former Premier Lucien Bouchard. The agency will oversee a number of projects along the waterfront including private development, a light rail line, and a possible Metro station in Old Port.

Professor Murray Douglas is this year's winner of the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineering R.S. Jane Memorial Lecture Award. The award recognizes a person who while residing in Canada has made an exceptional achievement in the field on chemical engineering or industrial chemistry.

The Faculty of Arts Award of Excellence went to Valentina Matsangos, the Administrative Assistant of the Department of English. Matsangos--who has been with the English department since 1974--was cited for her organization skills, sense of responsibility, and for being "the glue that holds this department together."

John Stagg, a PhD student in the department of experimental medicine recently was selected as the First Prize Winner of the 12 National finalists for the prestigious CIHR/Biocontact 2002 scientific poster presentation held in Quebec city on October 2-3.

The Foundation for Research into Children's Diseases has given their Prix d'Excellence to Dr Francine Ducharme. Dr Ducharme is a scientist at the Montreal Children's Hospital and McGill's Department of Pediatrics who conducts research into clinical care of children with asthma.
