$30.5M boost for McGill research

NSERC awards grants, scholarships in sciences and engineering

McGill University's share of a $535-million funding package from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) will help boost cutting-edge research in agriculture, dentistry, education, engineering, management, medicine, music and sciences.

"With this funding from NSERC, our world-class professors and students will continue to create knowledge and opportunities for growth that are essential to our economy and community," Denis Thérien, Vice-Principal (Research and International Relations), said of the funding, announced recently by Jim Prentice, Minister of Industry and minister responsible for the NSERC.

The package includes $535 million in grants and scholarships awarded to 9,900 professors and students at 75 institutions across Canada. McGill's share totals $30.5 million.

The funding announcement is in keeping with Canada's Science and Technology Strategy, which identifies four areas of focus: the environment, natural resources and energy, information and communication technologies, and health and life sciences.

"McGill University is extremely well positioned to deliver cutting-edge research in these four areas," Thérien said.
