Frames of Mind

The Douglas Mental Health University Institute presents the fifth annual edition of "Frames of Mind," a film series designed to raise public awareness of mental health. The screening of each film is followed by a discussion on mental health issues. On Wednesday, May 21, the series will feature La Brunante (Twilight), the Quebec-made 2007 film about a 73-year-old woman who plans to take her own life upon learning that she has Alzheimer's Disease.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with guests Fernand Dansereau, the film's director, and Dr. Serge Gauthier, Director of the Alzheimer's Disease Research Unit at McGill's Centre for Studies in Aging (Douglas Mental Health University Institute.)

Museums Day at the Redpath

The Redpath joins 28 other Montreal museums opening their doors to the public for free on Sunday, May 25, as part of Montreal's annual Museums Day. Stop in at the Redpath for special tours of the exhibits and hands-on activities such as making a fossil replica, dissecting an owl pellet or learning about the minerals of Quebec. On the front lawn, join members of the Royal Astronomical Society for some solar viewing.
Museums Day also marks the Redpath debut of a temporary exhibit of wooden sculptures carved by those most Canadian of sculptors, beavers. "Beaver Art" presents beaver carvings collected by Professor Henry Mintzberg, the J.E. Cleghorn Chair at McGill's Desautels Faculty of Management. The collection will be on display in the Redpath's Dawson Gallery until Oct. 30.

Champlain... 400 Years Later
As part of an exhibition called "Champlain Revisited: Celebrating the Foundation of Quebec 1608," the McGill University Library's Rare Books and Special Collections Division is displaying a collection of special material related to the 400th anniversary of the founding of the province's capital city by French explorer Samuel de Champlain. The exhibition includes Champlain's own published works recounting his voyages, which contain valuable iconographic and cartographic information about early New France. There are also colourful special supplements, souvenir booklets and postcards from the 300th anniversary celebrations of Champlain's arrival that took place in 1908.

Computer Science Open House

The McGill School of Computer Science, one of the leading teaching and research centres for computer science in Canada, is holding its first ever Alumni Open House on Friday, May 16. The event is open to all professors, alumni, undergrads and friends from the past, and also to those who wish to learn more about the school. The daylong event includes a presentation by Professor Emeritus Godfried Toussaint and a keynote speech on the Internet and Society by Alan Emtage (BSc '87, MSc '91), a founding member of the Internet Society who conceived and implemented ARCHIE, a pre-Web Internet search engine. Presentations by both alumni and students will be followed by an awards reception, cocktails and a banquet at Thomson House.
