Prof. Heather Munroe-Blum has been reappointed to a second term as McGill's Principal and Vice-Chancellor by the university's Board of Governors.
The reappointment, to run from 2008 to 2012, was unanimously approved by the Board of Governors at its Dec. 11, 2006 meeting. Prof. Munroe-Blum told the Reporter she remains deeply grateful for the very generous welcome she received both at McGill and in Montreal four years ago and that she's exhilarated at the prospect of what lies ahead for the remaining six years. "There is a great sense of momentum at McGill that comes from the collective effort of everyone — students, staff, faculty and alumni. The successes we've had, across so many areas of the university, are collective ones — the work of the student task force, academic planning, the campuses' master planning process and government and community relations, and the countless and worthy student projects underway every day."
Chancellor Richard Pound said McGill has benefited greatly from Prof. Munroe-Blum's leadership since she joined the university in 2003, and can expect great things in her second term. "During Principal Munroe-Blum's first term, McGill's performance and profile have improved locally, nationally and internationally, with a focus on the pursuit of excellence in all areas," Pound said. "We look forward to her continuing dynamic leadership and commitment to McGill and the many communities it serves."
As for the future, Prof. Munroe-Blum said the goal will be to continue making changes that will position the university to be as great 50 years from now as it has been at its prime, and to protect and reinforce its many existing strengths. "Not to say there aren't big challenges ahead of us," she cautioned. "But I'm optimistic and enthusiastic about our shared future. It's my profound belief that there is no cause more important in society than the cause of higher education. McGill is a gem of an example in this regard and I feel happy and lucky to be principal of this great institution."
Prof. Munroe-Blum became the 16th principal of McGill when she came here from the University of Toronto. She is a member of the Faculty of Medicine and a professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She and her husband, Len Blum, a screenwriter and graduate of McMaster University, have one daughter.
