Janusz A. Kozinski will become McGill's associate vice-principal (research) on April 1. He is a Sir William Dawson Scholar and an associate professor in the Department of Mining, Metals and Materials Engineering. Kozinski received his graduate degrees from AGH-University of Science & Technology in Krakow, Poland, and joined McGill in 1994 after postdoctoral training at the University of Utah and MIT.

Kozinski is the leader of a multidisciplinary research team involving colleagues from medicine, chemistry, biotechnology and engineering. His work includes projects related to bioenergy, hydrogen economy, pathogen and mutagen destruction, greenhouse gas mitigation, and Mars exploration.

He's also familiar with administrative matters at McGill, having served on many of the university's committees. His new responsibilities will include developing research policies and procedures on matters related to research ethics and funding.

Kozinski's extremely happy with his new position, and foresees new possibilities. "We will not only inform our researchers about various research and research funding opportunities. We will analyze these opportunities in view of McGill's strengths, consult with researchers and propose approaches. I have always tried to be creative in my own research; however, creativity does not end in the lab!"
