Convocation on screen

The multimedia and audiovisual section of the Instructional Communications Centre has convocation covered from every angle -- including from above.

Three cameras will be in the tent with the graduands and faculty, catching every moment from both sides of the stage. A professional will be the on-site director providing video switching.

Nine of the 10 convocation ceremonies will be streamed live to campus computers, as well as to the overflow room set up for the Faculty of Arts convocation in Leacock 132.

"We're also going to be doing DVDs of this -- they'll be available for students to buy, as souvenirs," said Multimedia and Audiovisual services Associate Director Jean-Guy Tremblay.

Tremblay explained that this process is a first for McGill. As they haven't yet tested the Macdonald Campus line, that convocation will not be streamed.

"Next convocation we should be able to do that," he said.

In addition to the cameras near the stage, a continuously streaming image of Lower Field will be sent out to the world from the vantage point of the top of the Redpath Museum.

"It's not a webcam, it's a real video camera, it captures images at 30 frames per second" said Tremblay. Broadcast on the new streaming server, the camera will provide real-time and 24-hour views of the campus during convocation week.

DVDs of the 2004 convocation can be pre-ordered at www.mcgill.ca/convocations/orderform.
