Harman’s “sonic tour-de-force” wins big

Chris Paul Harman, Assistant Professor of Composition at the Schulich School of Music, has won the Jules Léger Prize for New Chamber Music for his composition “Postludio a rovescio” (Inside out postlude). Created for a Netherlands-based chamber orchestra, the piece was described as a “sonic tour-de-force” by the jury that evaluated the submissions. The prize, designed to encourage the creation of new Canadian chamber music, is awarded annually in partnership with the Canada Council for the Arts, the Canadian Music Centre and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/Société Radio-Canada. This is the second time Prof. Harman has won the Léger Prize, having won it in 2001 for his composition titled “Amerika.” The award will be presented to Prof. Harman at a concert in Toronto on April 11 where “Postludio a rovescio” will be performed for the first time in Canada by the New Music Concert Ensemble. CBC Radio 2 The Signal will broadcast “Postludio a rovescio” on April 14 between 10:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m.
