Editor's note

Welcome to the new Reporter

The McGill Reporter is starting publication early this year, in time to welcome back all the new and returning staff, faculty and students.

There have been some changes over the summer, one of which you probably noticed as you picked up the paper. Design Editor Natalie Fletcher, who joined us in the spring, has been getting font happy and trying on different design elements for size. Under the guidance of newspaper design guru Lucie Lacava, we've tweaked the Reporter for better readability by going from a five-column format to four columns and choosing Berling Roman for a body font. Alert readers will note some continuity with the old design — the headline font, Nobel, was also used last year.

The Reporter has a new associate editor, Neale McDevitt. The NDG resident's book One Day, Even Trevi Will Crumble was named Best First Book for 2003 by the Quebec Writers Federation. Though the 1980s were dissolute for some of us, gentle-seeming Neale spent much of that decade as a member of the Canadian National Weightlifting Team. So when he calls, make sure to get back to him.

Catherine Paquette is with us again this year as an editorial assistant. She's the friendly voice on the end of the line when you phone for general inquiries and ad requests.

Former associate editor Mark Reynolds has become an editorial project manager for the office of the Associate Vice-Principal (Communications). Those who are fans of his deft touch with words needn't lament, as he'll still be writing for the paper. Other writers include Jeff Roberts, formerly a regular Reporter freelancer, now a URO communications officer, with a focus on the Faculty of Law.

The URO has two other new communications officers: Rita Kotzia, working with the Faculty of Management and Cynthia Lee, editor of the university's e-bulletin Voilà McGill. Rick Hink joins us as a part-time communications associate and the steady Maria Naso is our office administrative secretary.

Sylvain-Jacques Desjardins, a familiar byline for readers, has been promoted to associate director of the URO. And heading up the crew is another fresh face, Kristine Greenaway, our new director of the URO.

We all wish you a great start to an even better year!
