Professor Jean Pierre Julien from the Centre for Research in Neuroscience at the Montreal General Hospital won the Sheila Essey Award for ALS Research. The prize honours outstanding research in the field of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a fatal neuromuscular disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Julien is credited with determining that peripherin, a protein detected in the majority of cells affected with ALS, may be a major contributor to the debilitating symptoms of the disease. The prize, awarded by the ALS Association and the American Academy of Neurology, is worth $25,000 U.S.
Professor Axel Maugey from the Department of French Language and Literature has been named a chevalier of the Ordre de la Légion d'Honneur by the government of France. Maugey's research interests include the role of French in Asia, French movie history, and French and Quebec culture and literature.
Dr. Gloria Tannenbaum from the Department of Pediatrics has been selected as the Montreal YWCA's Woman of Distinction in Health. Tannenbaum was cited for her internationally recognized research in the area of growth hormomes — her work led to tests that differentiate between children who are deficient in growth hormone and children who are small, but growing regularly.
Ms. Astrid Christoffersen-Deb, a student in the Faculty of Medicine, earned the YWCA's Young Woman of Distinction prize. Christoffersen-Deb has been active in McGill's Model United Nations and in Amnesty International. She is also involved in medical research in India where she is evaluating maternal and reproductive health services.
