Nikolai Nikolaiczuk

Nikolai Nikolaiczuk taught at McGill for more than three decades, beginning as a lecturer in 1939.

Nikolai Nikolaiczuk, retired Professor of Animal Science, died at age 93 in Pointe Claire. Nikolaiczuk came to McGill in 1939 as a lecturer in the Department of Animal Science, and was a full professor from 1962 until his retirement in 1971.

Born in Sniatyn, Alberta, on December 5, 1913, Nikolai Nikolaiczuk received both his BSc (1936) and MSc (1938) from the University of Alberta and later completed a PhD degree at Ohio State University in 1948. His PhD thesis included pioneering research on the use of radioactive isotopes in tracing the role of phosphorus in animal nutrition.

During his 32 years at McGill, Nikolaiczuk was active in many different areas. In addition to teaching, he was Chairman of General Agricultural Science for a 10-year term, served as a consultant to the Cooperative Fédérée du Québec, as well as to feed industry suppliers such as Pfizer and Merck. Nikolaiczuk also conducted research in areas such as mineral metabolism in poultry and the toxicity of food additives. He published over 30 articles in scientific journals, as well as numerous features for Feed Industry publications. In 1979 he received the Golden Award from the Canadian feed industry Association for the prominent role he played in Quebec's poultry industry.

Nikolaiczuk is survived by a sister, Mary Flatla, two sons and a daughter, Nick, Peter and Marcia, five grandchildren, Stephen, Penny, Derek, Laurent and Charlotte, and a niece, Lisa. His wife, Jane Miller Smith, predeceased him in 1997.
