Runaway media: Who's in charge?

Media and morality will be the talk of the Faculty Club when a panel of prominent Canadians comes together to address the topic of communications in the 21st century. "Lost in Space? Steering the Media in the Age of Globalization" will take place on Tuesday, September 13 at 6:00 pm. The event will see leaders from law, broadcasting and academia share their opinions on the increasingly diffuse nature of global media.

Public and private sector representatives will explore hard questions related to an era in which familiar media sources have grown fractured and new technologies make it ever easier for media to leak across borders. In such an environment, can media be tethered to morality or a common purpose? Can it be regulated? Who should try to do so?

These questions will be addressed at this event featuring the Beaverbrook Professor in Ethics, Media and Communications, Marc Raboy, CBC president Robert Rabinovitch, and Principal Heather Munroe-Blum. A limited number of spaces are available to staff and students who are invited to attend the event alongside professional journalists, academics and McGill alumni. Ignatieff — coming home?

As part of Homecoming festivities, Michael Ignatieff, soon to return to Canadian academic life at University of Toronto after a sojourn abroad, will give the Beatty Memorial Lecture at 10:00 am, Saturday, October 1. Pick up tickets now, at the McGill Bookstore's Special Order Desk, to hear the director of Harvard's Carr Center for Human Rights Policy speak on what free trade and globalization have done to the Canadian identity. How do we maintain sovereignty and identity in a globalized world?
