Kudos

Professor Martin Grant, from the Department of Physics, was selected by the Royal Society of Canada as the 1998 recipient of the Rutherford Memorial Medal. The prize recognizes outstanding research in any branch of physics. Grant's work focuses on complex structures and systems including flame fronts, crystallizing eutectics and self-lubricating polymer melts.

Professor James Ramsay, from the Department of Psychology, earned the 1998 Gold Medal of the Statistical Society of Canada. The prize recognizes Ramsay's innovative work on the applications of statistics to psychometrics, educational testing, multidimensional scaling and other areas, as well as his promotion of interdisciplinary research and his mentoring of young researchers.

Dr. Morris Duhaime, from the Division of Orthopedic Surgery, was awarded an honorary doctorate from Laurentian University in June. An internationally known pediatric orthopedic surgeon, Duhaime is credited with helping to introduce effective new treatments for the correction of adolescent scoliosis.

Dr. Vimla Patel, director of the Centre for Medical Education, was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Victoria this summer. Her cross-disciplinary work has influenced other researchers in a number of areas, including cognitive science, medical training, tele-health and human-machine interfacing.
