Mr. Pierre Gendron, a physical education student, was awarded the Bobby Bell Memorial Trophy as Most Valuable Player and the Molson Cup for Most Outstanding Player at the Friends of McGill Hockey awards banquet. Gendron was named McGill's male athlete of the year and recently played on the CIAU all-star team which beat an NCAA team in overtime in Detroit. In his Redmen career, Gendron recorded five hat tricks, including one six-goal game.

Mr. Jacob Eliosoff and Mr. François Labelle, students in mathematics, received Honorable Mention in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. Eliosoff placed 34th and Labelle 51st out of 2,407 contestants representing 408 colleges and universities across North America. McGill's team ranked 27th overall.

Professor Eric Mountjoy, of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, has been awarded the Logan Medal by the Geological Association of Canada. This is the highest award bestowed by the Association and is given to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to geoscientific knowledge in Canada. He has also won the Francis J. Pettijohn Medal for Sedimentology from the Society for Sedimentary Geology. Once again, it is the top honour given in this field.

Mrs. Frances Groen, Director of Libraries, will become a Fellow of the Medical Library Association at its ninety-ninth annual meeting in Seattle, Washington. She served as President of the Association in 1990.

Mr. Louis Houle, Computer Services Librarian at the Physical Sciences and Engineering Library, is this year's winner of the Libraries' Career Recognition Award. This award is presented annually to a librarian having made an exceptional contribution to the McGill Libraries or to the profession as a whole.

Mr. Gary Tynski, Print Curator of the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, is this year's winner of the Library Staff Excellence Award. This award is presented annually to a member of the library support staff who has made an exceptional contribution to the McGill University Libraries. Dr. Ronald Melzack, of the Department of Psychology, was selected by the Canadian Anesthetists' Society to receive the society's Research Recognition Award for outstanding contributions to research into the mechanisms of pain, as well as for providing inspiration in training and research.

Dr. Perle Feldman, of the Department of Family Medicine, won the 1996 Practice of Excellence Award in Outstanding Care, a prize sponsored by Servier. Feldman, who was lauded for her humanistic approach to patient care, was instrumental in creating McGill's Maternal Child Health Fellowship which allows family medicine graduates to obtain additional training in obstetrics.

Ms. Janice Paskey, editor of the McGill News, has won two gold medals for writing from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE). Her article about philosophy professor Marguerite Deslauriers's course on feminism earned a gold in the feature writing category. Paskey and McGill News assistant editor Mr. Patrick McDonagh also won gold in the issues writing category for their piece on how politics and economics affect professors' decisions about whether to remain at McGill. In addition, the magazine itself earned a silver medal. Credit goes to Paskey, McDonagh, former assistant editor Mr. Howard Bokser, and ICC designers Mr. Garry Graham and Ms. Patrice Atwell.

McGill's Open House '96 won a silver medal from CCAE for best special event. Judges cited the efforts of Open House chair Professor Avi Friedman, McGill 175 coordinator Mr. Keith Gallop, public relations officer Mr. Karl Jarosiewicz and Open House '96's many volunteers for making the event a standout success.

URO Central, the University Relations Office website, earned a bronze medal in the same competition. The prize goes to Jarosiewicz, the site's webmaster, URO Central designer Mr. Eric Smith and McGill Reporter associate editor Mr. Daniel McCabe.

Finally, two Development Office entries won CCAE awards. A gold medal was given for a photograph by Mr. George Zimbel which appeared in the McGill Fund Council Report on Private Giving, edited by communications officer Ms. Vivian Lewin. A bronze medal went to communications officer Mr. Daniel Chonchol for the McGill faculty newsletters.

Professor B.C. Eu, of the Department of Chemistry, has been elected a Fellow at the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics for three years. This is an international center located in Seoul, South Korea, and is headed by Nobel laureate C.N. Yang.

Dr. Jacqueline McClaran, of the Montreal General Hospital, was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation. The organization provides evaluation and developmental consultations for hospitals, long-term care facilities and local community health centres across the country.
