Residual Balances in NSERC Accounts
NSERC grants that have not been renewed or extended or that have had to be terminated may contain residual balances of funds allocated in prior years and/or issued in the current fiscal year. NSERC will authorize residual funds from prior years to be transferred to a General Research Fund (GRF) of the University. Contrary to our past practice, where residual balances were automatically returned to the grantees for an indefinite period of time, they will, from now on, be used according to NSERC's policy. Namely, one year after termination of the grant, the funds will be used for the broad purpose of enhancing the quality of research in the natural sciences and engineering. Consequently, these balances will be handled and distributed through the Faculty of Graduate Studies & Research Grants Programs.

Deadlines for the Fiscal Year 1996/97
March 15, 1997 - McGill Faculty Travel Grants (Social Sciences & Humanities): Conferences from March 15, 1997 to June 30, 1997.
March 26, 1997 - Seminar Grants: Departmental speakers' programs or colloquium series.
March 31, 1997 - Conference Grants: Meetings, symposia or workshops convened for the purpose of disseminating research.
April 17, 1997 - Social Sciences & Humanities Research Grants Sub-Committees: The Sub-Committee makes awards of up to $3,500. Funding is provided on a competitive basis for pilot investigators likely to attract external funding, for self-contained research, for bridging funds between grants and for topping off externally funded research that is nearing completion. Priority is also given to projects recommended but not supported by SSHRC for lack of funds. Graduate students are eligible to apply for funds to support their thesis research expenses
May 15, 1997 - Research and Development Fund: Individual researchers, Centre support, Computer and Equipment.
2 Months Prior to Sabbatical Leave - Sabbatic Leave Research Grants: The University gives sabbaticants the opportunity to take advantage of income tax regulations which allow the University, under certain conditions, to award a research grant from funds that would normally be paid as salary to staff on leave.
