The following are responses to Erica Zelfand's Feb. 9 article "Fed visits class," in which the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development visited Norman Cornett's Religious Studies classes.
Giovanni Scalia: "The most interesting discussion was in response to the water situation in the First Nations communities. It made a group of twenty-year olds lives realize that social inequality exists on our own soil."
Vanessa Morrell: "It frustrates me, as a child basically raised by Suzuki, and pushed by my parents to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and compost, that most of the kids in the class didn't see the dialogic session as relevant. They failed to acknowledge the importance and necessity for our society's focus on environmental degradation and the sustainability of the resources that we have come to overexploit and take for granted in our everyday life."
Geri Blinick: "Recycling, though important and absolutely valuable, is only a band-aid solution to our vast consumption and production of waste material. How many of us are actually willing to CHANGE our behaviour? How many of us are willing to consume less and generate less waste?
SSMU VP (Clubs and Services) Leon Mwotia: "There are several petitions [including at the SSMU desk] that are going to be submitted to the administration concerning the placement of recycling bins in classes. Our aim is to collect 1,000 signatures and use it to press for this one little step that marks a move to increased environmental sustainability.
