WAM hits century mark

Fans and members of the Women Associates of McGill (WAM) braved dreadful weather on January 18 to attend a reception in honour of this year's scholarship recipients. The WAM had a particularly good reason to feel celebratory - the group has been around in one form or another for 100 years. Their most visible activity is the annual McGill Book Fair (co-organized with McGill's Women's Alumnae Association), which raises funds for the scholarships.

At the event, Marc Weinstein, director of university campaigns, spoke of the changing face of fundraising. Three scholarship recipients talked of how helpful the extra money is to them. The scholarships afford them the time to be more involved in university community activities such as senate and Engineers Without Borders. Alexandra Pace, on her second year of scholarship, said she is a major in psychology, minor in English, and wants to apply to law school. Her funding has allowed her to keep up her harp playing and creative writing, as well as do her first year abroad in the UK.
