Three members of the McGill community have been shortlisted for National Magazine Awards. Islamic Studies professor Eric Ormsby was nominated in the poetry category (he won Silver in the essay category in 2002) for work published in Arc. Reporter associate editor Mark Reynolds was nominated in the travel category for an article he wrote for explore magazine. Sherwin Tjia was nominated in the editorial package category as part of a team for work he did with Maisonneuve magazine. Tjia is an illustrator with the Molson Informatics Project, as well as for The McGill Daily and The Reporter. Winners will be announced at a ceremony in Toronto on June 11.

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation announced that Professor Roderick A. Macdonald of McGill University is being awarded the prestigious Trudeau Fellows Prize. He will receive a $150,000 prize paid over three years, plus a $25,000 annual allowance for travel and research expenses. Macdonald was one of five fellows named this year. The Trudeau Foundation was endowed by the Government of Canada in 2002. The Foundation is entirely non- partisan, and it strives to give voice to a wide variety of perspectives.

Dr. Celeste Johnston of the School of Nursing has been awarded the Prix Florence for research in nursing science from L'Ordre des infirmières et des infirmiers du Québec. Johnston was awarded for her work in pain research with children and infants.

Former member of the Law Faculty Julius Grey has been awarded the Médaille du Barreau du Québec for 2004. The medal is the highest distinction awarded by the Quebec Bar. Grey was cited for contributing in an exceptional way to the advancement of Quebec society and for his ardent defense of fundamental human rights.

Principal Heather Munroe-Blum was named one of 26 exceptional women at a gala held by the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. The 16th annual awards recognize women whose boldness and commitment have allowed them to carve out a place of choice for themselves in their sector of activity.

Dr. Alain Beaudet has been named president of the Fonds de la recherché en santé du Québec (FRSQ). A professor with the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, he had previously been scientific adviser and director of scientific affairs and programs for the FRSQ.

Two McGill students, Yunlu Shen (civil engineering) and Julie-Anne Denis (mechanical engineering), received a $5,000 award each in the province-wide competition Chapeau, les filles! et Excelle Science. The Government of Quebec recognizes excellence in non-traditional technical, professional and scientific areas of endeavour for women at the high school, CEGEP and university levels.

Dr. Emily Hamilton accepted the Genesis 2004 Award from the Association of Health Technologies Industry. The award, granted in partnership with BioQuébec, recognizes innovators in biotechnology, life sciences and health technology industries. Dr. Hamilton is Founder of LMS Medical Systems Inc., a spin-off company that provides clinical information systems and support designed to improve patient care for mothers and their infants during labor and delivery.
