Dr. Duncan Pedersen has recently been appointed the assistant scientific director (International Programs) at the Douglas Hospital Research Centre (DHRC) and scientific director of the Montreal-based WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health. Dr. Pedersen, who joined McGill University in 1998, was leader of the Psychosocial Research Division until 2003. A physician trained in public health, international health, epidemiology and medical anthropology, he has extensive fieldwork research experience in South America. His current interests include cross-cultural, ethnographic and epidemiological research on structural violence and mental health outcomes.

Emeritus Professor William F. Grant, Department of Plant Science, and Peter B. Moens (York University) have been honoured by the Genetics Society of Canada by having the prestigious Genetics Society of Canada Award of Excellence named after them; it is now the William F. Grant and Peter B. Moens Award of Excellence.

Architecture professor Robert Mellin has won the prestigious Winterset Award for his book Tilting, published by Princeton Architectural Press. The Winterset Award was established by journalist and author Richard Gwyn to commemorate his late wife, Sandra Fraser Gwyn; it honours the best writing by a Newfoundland native or resident. Tilting is about the life and architecture of a small Fogo Island community of the same name. The prize is worth $5,000.

The 11th Annual McGill Charity Ball filled the Faculty Club to capacity, raising $17,000 for the McGill Cancer Centre on March 13.
