Sociology professor John Hall has been appointed as dean of the Faculty of Arts for a five-year term beginning June 1 and ending May 31, 2008. His appointment was made on April 28, 2003, following approval by the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors.

Hall will assume his new functions at a defining moment in the evolution of what has been referred to by his faculty as the "Arts Renaissance."

Hall received his PhD from the London School of Economics and joined McGill's Department of Sociology in 1991, becoming a James McGill Professor in 2000. Hall is a world-renowned historical and macro-sociologist, with an interest in the nature of society.

Hall has published extensively on market ideologies, state theories, nationalism and globalization, among other topics. An outstanding teacher and lecturer whose clarity and excitement about intellectual issues are especially valued by students, he was awarded the H. Noel Fieldhouse Award for Excellence in Teaching by the Faculty of Arts in 1998. In addition to his teaching and research, Professor Hall has held a number of administrative posts at McGill, including the chair of the Department of Sociology.
