In the Faculty of Medicine, traditionally we have relied on the goodwill of the clinicians, their love of teaching and their sense of commitment to the University, to ensure that our medical students are supervised and taught in their clinical years. Rewards have not included financial compensation or academic promotion to any meaningful extent.
In the context of today's healthcare system, where resources are thin and demands are great, it is becoming increasingly difficult to recruit excellent clinicians who are willing to give so freely of their time and expertise, to take on teaching responsibilities. The challenge to the University is significant.
