As of this writing, Tuesday's shocking events still don't seem real. McGill has over 1,700 American students as part of our community and many of our faculty and staff hail from the U.S. as well. I think I speak for everyone at McGill in expressing my deep sorrow at this senseless loss of life.

Counselling Services is offering a drop-in clinic available to any student who wants to talk about the tragedy. Their office is located in room 4200 of the Brown Building.

The Faculty of Religious Studies has organized a memorial service for the victims of Tuesday's attacks that will take place on Thursday September 20 at noon in the university chapel in the Birks Building (3520 University).

The Chaplaincy Service, composed of representatives of Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh faith communities, is also organizing a service.

"May the prayers, emanating from all the religious communities we represent be joined to those of people of goodwill around the world who seek understanding, reconciliation and true, lasting peace," says a statement recently issued by McGill's Chaplaincy team.

So say we all.

Goodbye and hello

The McGill Reporter will never be quite the same again.

Bronwyn Chester, our associate editor for the past three years, and one of the biggest reasons why we've fared well in awards competitions during that period, has decided to leave us in order to take on some new challenges.

Thankfully, Bronwyn is remaining part of the McGill family -- her new job is writer/communications officer for Macdonald Campus.

Long before she had any inkling that the Mac position might one day be available, Bronwyn was an enthusiastic Macdonald Campus booster -- "Daniel, we need to do more stories about the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences," she would urge, frequently interrupting my mid-morning and mid-afternoon naps.

Mac has hired a good one. I know.

As a result, I've had to do some hiring myself. Next issue, Maeve Haldane will make her debut as our new associate editor. The name might be familar as Maeve has contributed several articles to the Reporter. She has also been a regular presence in Hour as that tabloid's restaurant reviewer and food writer.

Maeve has a degree in theatre from Concordia University and a master's in anthropology from Université de Montréal. For several years in between, she studied at McGill.

She has been published in the National Post, helped organize a national anthropology conference at McGill and has done copy-editing for a variety of clients. According to her résumé, she also dances the tango. Just keep it out of the office, okay Maeve?
